Le congrès annuel de la Société française d’études écossaises, intitulé « L’Écosse et l’entre-deux », invite à réfléchir aux multiples formes de passages, de transitions et de médiations qui ont façonné l’histoire, la littérature, les arts, la langue et la culture écossaises.
Traditionnellement perçue comme un territoire de seuils et de frontières — entre îles et continent, entre Nord et Sud, entre particularisme national et appartenance britannique —, l’Écosse se prête particulièrement à une réflexion sur l’« entre-deux » comme espace dynamique de création, de négociation et de transformation.
L’« entre-deux » peut désigner aussi bien une position géographique (entre Highlands et Lowlands, entre terre et mer, entre périphérie et centre), une posture linguistique ou identitaire (entre gaélique, scots et anglais ; entre traditions locales et influences extérieures), qu’un espace symbolique (entre traditions et modernité, local et global, réel et imaginaire).
Les communications pourront s’intéresser aux figures liminaires (passeurs, traducteurs, artistes, voyageurs, médiateurs), aux formes hybrides (textuelles, visuelles, sonores), aux moments de transition historique ou politique, ou encore aux représentations de l’entre-deux dans les discours et les arts.
En explorant ces dynamiques d’entre-deux, le colloque cherchera à interroger la manière dont l’Écosse — souvent perçue comme une culture de seuils, de marges et de passages — pense et met en scène l’altérité, la rencontre et la transformation.
Dans cette perspective, le colloque souhaite accueillir des contributions portant sur :
• les figures liminaires et médiatrices (passeurs culturels, traducteurs, voyageurs, artistes, journalistes, savants, éditeurs etc) ; avec parcours de médiateurs culturels, célèbres ou oubliés, Médiateurs invisibles ou marginalisés : figures féminines, traducteurs anonymes, éditeurs de l’ombre
• les formes hybrides de la création écossaise, qu’elles soient textuelles, visuelles, musicales ou linguistiques ;
• les moments de transition politique, sociale ou culturelle (Réforme, Union, Lumières, Romanticisme, Dévolution, Brexit) ;
• les représentations de l’entre-deux dans la littérature, les arts visuels, la musique, la pensée ou les médias contemporains ;
• les modalités de l’échange et du transfert culturel, à l’intérieur de la nation écossaise ou dans ses relations avec l’Europe et le monde. Espaces de médiation : salons, universités, festivals, librairies, galeries, institutions
En explorant ces dynamiques d’entre-deux, le colloque cherchera à comprendre comment l’Écosse — souvent pensée comme une culture de marges, de croisements et de médiations — conçoit et met en scène l’altérité, la rencontre et la transformation. On s’intéressera tout particulièrement à la manière dont ces tensions fécondes nourrissent l’imaginaire écossais et contribuent à redéfinir son identité culturelle, linguistique et politique.

Call for Papers – “Scotland and the In-Between”
The annual conference of the Société française d’études écossaises (French Society for Scottish Studies), entitled “Scotland and the In-Between”, invites participants to consider the many forms of passage, transition, and mediation that have shaped Scottish history, literature, the arts, language, and culture.
Traditionally viewed as a land of thresholds and borders—between islands and mainland, between North and South, between national distinctiveness and British belonging—Scotland lends itself particularly well to thinking about the “in-between” as a dynamic space of creation, negotiation, and transformation.
The “in-between” may refer to a geographical position (between Highlands and Lowlands, land and sea, periphery and centre), a linguistic or identity stance (between Gaelic, Scots and English; between local traditions and external influences), as well as a symbolic space (between tradition and modernity, the local and the global, the real and the imaginary). Papers may focus on liminal figures (cultural brokers, translators, artists, travellers, mediators), hybrid forms (textual, visual, sonic), moments of historical or political transition, or representations of the in-between in discourse and the arts.
By exploring these dynamics of in-betweenness, the congress will examine how Scotland—often perceived as a culture of thresholds, margins, and passages—thinks about and stages otherness, encounter, and transformation.
In this perspective, the conference welcomes contributions on (but not limited to) the following topics:
· Liminal and mediating figures (cultural brokers, translators, travellers, artists, journalists, scholars, publishers, etc.); trajectories of cultural mediators, famous or forgotten; invisible or marginalised mediators: female figures, anonymous translators, behind-the-scenes publishers
· Hybrid forms in Scottish creation, whether textual, visual, musical, or linguistic
· Moments of political, social, or cultural transition (Reformation, Union, Enlightenment, Romanticism, Devolution, Brexit)
· Representations of the in-between in literature, the visual arts, music, thought, or contemporary media
· Modes of exchange and cultural transfer, within the Scottish nation or in its relations with Europe and the wider world; spaces of mediation: salons, universities, festivals, bookshops, galleries, institutions
· By exploring these dynamics of in-betweenness, the conference seeks to understand how Scotland—often conceived as a culture of margins, crossings, and mediations—imagines and stages otherness, encounter, and transformation. Particular attention will be paid to how these productive tensions feed the Scottish imagination and help to redefine its cultural, linguistic, and political identity.
